Handler: Courtney Esparza Caleb is a rescue dog that I got when he was about a year and a half old. He absolutely loves to work with children at the children’s shelter or at events like the Texas Book Fair. When I was looking for Caleb I knew I wanted a male black lab mix around one or two years old. There were so many wonderful dogs that fit that description and needed homes; I had no idea how I would choose the one for me. I had read somewhere in a book that a great way to determine how much of a people person a dog is, is to watch how they respond to touch. I visited several great dogs who were excited to meet me but more excited to run around the yard and play. They brought out Caleb who showed me his ball skills by rolling the ball to me with his nose. Wow, what a talented dog, but now it was time to do the touch test. I brought my friend and her young son with me on my journey, and we put away his ball and took turns petting Caleb. He became instantly calm and just melted into our hands, and I knew this was the dog for me. He had the potential to bring the gift of touch and being touched to others. He graduated over the summer from Divine Canines and the rest is history…. |
